Bicycle Trails and Rides

(09-10)

I wanted to do a Stevens Canyon Trail bike ride before the end of summer.  On Labor Day took my new camera and rode up Stevens Canyon Rd, then Grizzly Flat to Highway 35.  From there pedaled to 9 and 35 for a snack stop before going to Lexington by way of Black Rd.  It’s an easy ride back to Santa Clara through Vasona Park.  This was 44.4 miles and took all day with the rest stops.  Missed the scenic route by taking Grizzly Flat; and so didn’t get a lot of really nice pictures.  You should take the Stevens Canyon Nature Trail and see for yourself, it is worth it.  Haven’t yet posted any pictures, I’ve just got too much going now.

(08-10)

So many months have gone by and haven’t updated the bicycle rides section.  Last summer made many rides up Stevens Canyon Rd, then Grizzly Flat (or Stevens Creek nature Trail) to Highway 35.  From there would ride to 9 and 35 for a snack stop before going to Lexington.  It’s an easy ride back to Santa Clara from there.  Did the Monte Bello Rd return from Stevens Canyon Trail once on purpose and later by mistake.  And once rode up Monte Bello Rd and returned by way of Stevens Canyon Trail.    Never even tried to pedal up 9 from Santa Cruz toward intersection 9 and 35; it just looks to be too much!  Also last summer did 31 mile Tour de Peninsula, 35 mile Tour de Woodside, and 50 mile Coyote Creek Classic.  So far this summer have only done the 31 mile Tour de Peninsula.  There’s the 35 mile Tour de Menlo coming up.  No way, just too much other stuff going on.

(03-08)

I’ve been to Santa Cruz a few times since the last entry and it has been great.  Either all the way up Highway 9 or to Stevens Canyon Rd, then Redwood Gulch Rd, and the rest of the way up Highway 9 to the top.  Of course this is a good place to rest!

Coasting on the way down to Santa Cruz the first 4 miles I saw many unhappy looking people climbing the grade.  It is just a bit harder than the Saratoga side in this area.  I wonder how far some had climbed since there is a unofficial county bus stop just 4 miles from the top at the Highway 9 / Big Basin Way intersection.  Continuing down Highway 9 I saw more bicyclists struggling up the hill.  From Santa Cruz it’s around 30 miles to this point; with my aerobics goals nearly satisfied, I was content to just coast by.  The road down Highway 9 is very scenic and with very little peddling uphill.  There are lots of places for snacks which I normally indulge once.  In Santa Cruz there is a very nice shuttle bus to the San Jose CalTrain’s station every 30 minutes.

(01-08)

Haven’t updated this in a while; I have a much nicer bike and have gone on many bike rides.  Many times to

Morgan Hill (by Coyote Creek), Lexington, Santa Cruz (with the bus back), and many more flat rides.  Still mysteriously

beckoning me is the ride from Bear Creek Rd / Highway 9 up to Skyline / Highway 9.  This isn’t that bad I’ve been told,

but looks long and steep.  This would be a fantastic Santa Cruz ride.  From Santa Clara to Steven Canyon Rd. to

Redwood Gulch Rd. and to the top of Highway 9.  Coast most all the way to Santa Cruz and have a nice lunch.

The Santa Cruz bus service is great on the return leg, almost making it to the Highway 9 / Skyline summit.  The last part

being less than the Saratoga / Highway 9  to the summit grade and it is all downhill from the top.  This ride won’t be

nearly as bad as the Sunnyvale to San Gregorio Beach and then Santa Cruz ride I did a few years ago.  All last year I just

did flat rides and so it’s a good time to do this one.  It needs to get warmer outside though, temps under the trees can

get bitter.  Also I’d like sunset to be after 6:00PM and so I’ll wait a few weeks more.

(Very Old Stuff)

Here are a few links and a *.jpg or two on local bicycles trails.  I particularly like Lexington Reservoir as a destination
and have traveled two separate routes to this point.  The easiest (because it is virtually flat the entire route) is by
way of Los Gatos Creek.  This trail can start at Bascom and Campbell in San Jose and is a very well maintained and
scenic trail.  Frequently, I start at my apartment which adds about 20 miles to make a round trip of 40 miles.  For fun
you can bike around Lexington which adds about 7 additional miles.  Average speed is about 14 MPH for the city streets
and Los Gatos Trail sections; it does get hilly around the reservoir and means lower gears in some places.

I've done only one bike trip in the Stevens Canyon Rd. area and it was incredible!  I never even made it off the
pavement and from the stories and maps this has to be a really good biking area.  I am planning a Saratoga Gap ride
in the immediate future, and will return from the intersection of highway 9 and 35 by riding down 9 to Redwood Gulch Rd,
and backtrack down Stevens Canyon Rd. back to my apartment.  I did about my second hardest bike ride when I took
Stevens Canyon Rd. and up Redwood Gulch Rd. to Highway 9.  Then 4 miles up 9 to the intersection of 9 and 35, where I
turned south on 35 and on to Gish Rd. (just past Bear Creek Rd.) it's all downhill from there and I wound up at Black Rd
and Highway 17.  There's a freeway overpass and you are right next to Lexington and a dirt trail to the North end of the dam.
From here I just took the Los Gatos Creek Trail and the whole round trip was just 50 miles.  I froze completely riding down
Black Rd., I had to stop near 17 and thaw out for almost 45 minutes.  This was sort of a thrill ride and definitely worth it,
next time definitely no Redwood Gulch Rd. since it is just too steep. The dirt trails are far superior (as I've been told) and
offer a much better riding experience supposedly.

This is a *.jpg and is very large right now. It's a map of Stevens Canyon area.
The above link loads rather slowly since it's ~2MB.

Another *.jpg and is just larger than the last. It shows the Lexington area very well.
The above link loads rather slowly since it's ~2.4MB.

This is an incredible link and describes a large number of rides.

Local bike trails with really good information..

Another really good bike trail link

Gee, it's been about a year since I've been on a bike ride over 20 miles.  Before summers over maybe a nice ride to Morgan Hill

(~06-00)
Finally I rode the Saratoga Gap trail up to Highway 9 and 35, its incredibly steep and at times washed out creek bed only.
This required a lot of walking on my part and took so much time I wound up returning by way of Highway 9 to downtown
Saratoga and then Sunnyvale.
